With back-to-school on the horizon, you want to deliver the best customer service ever—and the key to that is your staff. When it comes to hiring superstars, Vend, the retail software company, has a few tips. 

• Hire for attitude, train for skill, Vend suggests. Of course, you want staff to have dance knowledge, but you can always train them on the finer points of your store’s merchandise and its checkout routines. It’s much harder to instill energy, a can-do attitude and the emotional intelligence to relate to and communicate with customers. 

• Get out from behind the interview desk to best gauge if the applicant is the right fit for your store. Take them on a tour of the selling floor. How do they relate as they walk around? Do they smile, engage with people? 

• Try some role-play, to see how they’d deal with typical situations.   

• Interview your store’s biggest fans, who have a built-in passion for and knowledge of your brand.
