As we discussed in DRN last year, The Nutcracker is not only the holiday season’s signature ballet, it’s a cultural phenomenon with strong retail potential. New this year: Major U.S. toy manufacturer Mattel is harnessing that power as it celebrates the 25th anniversary of its animated film, Barbie in the Nutcracker.

“At Barbie, we’re proud to create stories that inspire imagination and spark joy across generations,” said Nathan Baynard, vice president and head of the Barbie brand, in a press release. “As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Barbie in the Nutcracker, this collection honors the enduring magic of dance and storytelling while inviting today’s families to create new holiday traditions and memories together.”

The anniversary celebrations will include the launch of an all-new doll collection and an animated special, streaming on Netflix in November. Of particular interest to independent dance retailers, however, is the retail partnerships the Barbie brand has established as part of the campaign, one of which will include a collection that’s available for wholesale.

In mid-October, leading dancewear brand Bloch teased its collaboration with the Barbie brand in an Instagram post revealing very few details. Since then, Bloch has distributed a press release confirming that the Barbie x Bloch partnership will comprise a limited-edition collection of girls’ and ladies’ clothing and accessories, featuring nostalgic prints inspired by both the beloved 2001 film and the new animated special.

The girls’ range will feature T-shirts and a tutu dress, alongside a soft sweatshirt, a wrap top, legwarmers, and a printed mesh ballet skirt, with all pieces presented in dreamy pastel hues. Meanwhile, the ladies’ collection will focus on elevated everyday essentials, including black slouch T-shirts and sweatshirts emblazoned with hot-pinkBarbie in the Nutcracker graphics. The accessories offering will include Bloch Booties, a large duffel bag, a drawstring bag, makeup bags, water bottles, and a pointe shoe handbag charm, each adorned with delicate ballet- and Nutcracker-inspired prints.

Set to launch on November 5, the collection will be available in all Bloch stores, online at blochworld.com, as well as through wholesale partners. Independent retailers interested in bringing the collaboration to their stores this holiday season should contact their Bloch representative for ordering information.

The Barbie partnerships aren’t limited to manufacturers. An exclusive assortment of products created in collaboration with The Royal Ballet has been available through the London-based ballet company’s online shop since September 18, and arrived in physical stores on October 23.

The collection features T-shirts, a baseball cap, socks and tote bags, alongside collectible items such as a special Barbie edition of The Royal Ballet’s best-selling ballet-shoe key ring, a limited-edition mug, a sticker set, and a pin-badge set. Seasonal highlights include a limited-edition pink Christmas jumper featuring Clara and the Nutcracker Prince, with the historic Royal Opera House depicted on the reverse, as well as a Christmas decoration inspired by a Nutcracker ticket.

While the collection isn’t available for wholesale, The Royal Ballet’s Barbie in the Nutcracker activations could offer inspiration for independent retailers looking to engage younger shoppers and families with their own in-store events. From October 28–31, for example, the company hosted a four-day pop-up experience in the ground-floor café at the Royal Opera House, featuring a Barbie in the Nutcracker photo opportunity, an interactive activity trail, and a magical postcard activity, where children wrote down their wishes and dreams before posting them in a Nutcracker postbox.
